Database Administrator

The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for providing technical design and support services to long-term support series, system and software development, and technology resource center clients. The technical design and support duties are primarily related to designing, creating, and supporting client server (Microsoft SQL Server) and flat file (Microsoft Access, Paradox, etc.) database environments.

The Database Administrator’s responsibilities will be:

  • Apply appropriate patches to Microsoft SQL Server and Access database environments

  • Maintain user accounts and access control rights for a Microsoft SQL Server or Access relational database

  • Develop and maintain the database testing and verification protocols

  • Design and implement a backup and recovery scheme for a Microsoft SQL Server or Access Database environment

  • Possess in-depth understanding of the use of transaction logs (sizing, truncation, etc.) as one aspect of an overall database recovery mechanism

  • Monitor and tune the database performance (understanding the implications of the design and use of data tables, indexes, queries, etc. on the overall performance of the database environment)

  • Query creation (collecting and translating requirements into business appropriate and technology efficient queries)

  • Report creation (collecting and translating requirements into business appropriate and technology efficient reports)

  • Plan and execute the design, creation and implementation of a relational database (translation of high-level requirements into functional requirements)

  • Document the structure and semantics of specific database implementations (Entity Relationship Diagrams, Data Dictionaries)

  • Create various objects in a database such as tables, views, stored procedures, indexes, and full-text catalogs

  • Create and maintain the users and roles to support security requirements of the system

  • Analyze, provide suggestions and implement solutions to optimize existing database environments (also document any side-effects and any down-stream implications of the optimizations)

  • Administer data warehousing techniques and technologies
